
FLYING SOLO COUNSELING
FLYING SOLO's Cheryl Klein has been licensed as a
pastoral counselor in Maine since 1994. As a member of the Maine Association of
Pastoral Counselors (MAPC), she incorporates the following into her practice of
counseling:
- Helping people of all ages integrate all of
their experiences---emotional, spiritual, physical and social---so that they
may move toward wholeness.
- Promoting each person's full function,
confidence and trust in self, in others, and in God (in whatever way
"God" is defined).
- Promoting healing and wholeness by respecting
each person's values and perspectives.
- Understanding and drawing upon each person's
religious perspective as a therapeutic resource.
The Licensed Pastoral Counselor in the state of
Maine is educated in theology, psychology and the behavioral sciences, and is
trained to integrate these disciplines in the practice of counseling and
psychotherapy. The Licensed Pastoral Counselor in the state of Maine is required
to have successfully completed:
- Four years of undergraduate study.
- A Master of Divinity degree, or masters or
doctoral degree in Pastoral Counseling from a regionally accredited
institution.
- A minimum of 54 graduate hours in theology and
psychology. These studies include among others: religious foundations, core
clinical theory; theory and practice of pastoral counseling, and treatment
modalities and specialized issues.
- 400 contact hours of Clinical Pastoral
Education.
- An internship of 1,000 hours of supervised
clinical counseling from a regionally or nationally certified program.
- At least 1,500 hours of direct counseling with
individuals, couples, families or groups.
- At least 3,000 hours of post masters,
Board-approved, supervised clinical counseling.
- An official call to the ministry of Pastoral
Counseling and endorsement from one's denomination or faith group.
Cheryl Klein earned her Master of Divinity degree
from Harvard University, 1984, after completing her Bachelor of Arts in
Religious Studies at California State University, Northridge, 1984. Her faith
journey has included Reformed Judaism, Unitarian Universalism, Buddhism and
Christian faiths. Please note: There is never an "agenda" for
encouraging or converting any client, of any age, to any faith or religious
movement. Rev. Klein, ordained in 1984, served in the

Theory and Practice, Ministry with Families, Ministry with Aging Sick and
Dying
- Adjunct Faculty, York County Community College,
Wells, Maine: courses taught include Introduction to Sociology, Ethics in
Contemporary Society, World Religions
FLYING SOLO clients are invited, but not ever
required, to consider their faith as a resource for healing. Past clients served
by FLYING SOLO's Cheryl Klein have included mixed-faith couples, children and
teens seeking answers to developing faith issues, as well as individuals of
great faith, little faith, lost faith or no faith. All faith stances are
respected. Clients without medical insurance who hold membership in local
churches may be able to access funding for FLYING SOLO pastoral counseling
services through their own pastors.
